Professor Miguel A. Esteban is a Spanish physician scientist fully based in China since 2008. He is currently Professor at the Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Senior Research Scientist at BGI Research. His research interests mainly focus on two major directions: on one side, unveiling the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms controlling stem cell fate transitions and on the other -together with his colleagues at BGI Research- creating a comprehensive molecular atlas of human disease and body regeneration using both in vitro stem cell models and single-cell omics of mammalian tissues. He has been recipient of many awards including the 2020 First Class Guangdong Provincial Award in Biological Sciences, 2019 National Friendship Award of China, 2018 Innovation Award of the Chinese Stem Cell Research Society, 2018 Honorary Citizen of Guangzhou and the 2017 Outstanding Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, among others. His lab has published articles in Nature Methods, Nature Cell Biology, Cell, Cell Stem Cell, Cell Research, Nature Protocols, Nature Materials and Nature Genetics, among other high-profile journals.
